An introduction to Anishinaabe cultural stories and practices related to the perinatal period. Participants will learn about the unique needs of Indigenous families experiencing Substance Use Disorders (SUD), Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and recovery. This session will also highlight the important role of Indigenous Doulas in supporting pregnancy and birth.

Training 2: Postpartum Traditions

An introduction to Anishinaabe cultural stories and practices for the postpartum healing period, with a focus on the cultural, social, and physical needs of the birthing person. The training will also explore special postpartum considerations for clients experiencing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).

Training 3: Newborn Care and NAS/NOWS
June 10th | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
An introduction to Anishinaabe cultural stories and practices for welcoming a newborn baby. Learn about the specific needs of infants experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) or Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS), with a focus on encouraging early parenting skills.

Training 4: Serving Unhoused and Housing Insecure Families
July 8th | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
People experiencing homelessness face significantly higher rates of physical health issues, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders (SUDs) (SAMHSA 2023). This training will explore the unique needs of families navigating housing insecurity or homelessness, which can have specific impacts on the perinatal experience. We’ll also discuss the different types of living situations families may encounter, including transient housing, hotel stays, and shelters.

Training 5: Communication and Advocacy Skills Masterclass
July 29th | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Families experiencing Substance Use Disorders (SUD), Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and recovery deserve high-quality care throughout their perinatal journeys. However, many face unfair barriers within these systems. In this advanced-topic masterclass, you’ll learn what it means to advocate effectively and how to do it. You’ll also learn how to communicate with your clients to improve their engagement with the systems of care that support them.
