Participant Information Sheet

WELCOME!

What is the purpose of this survey?
We are a group of researchers at the University of Wollongong who are interested in the perceptions people hold about mental health difficulties. This is to provide you with some more information about the purpose of this anonymous survey so you can decide whether you wish to complete it. We are hoping people in the Shoalhaven and Illawarra regions will be willing to get involved with our research and complete this survey. The survey will capture information on your beliefs and perceptions about mental health. There are no right or wrong answers and we are interested in what you think.

If I consent to participate, what will it involve?
If you are willing to complete the anonymous survey all you will need to do is click NEXT at the bottom of the page. By clicking on the link and completing the survey you are indicating that you are happy for your responses to be used in the current study. This survey is anonymous which means we won’t know who has or hasn’t taken part in it. We would like you to complete 28 questions regarding mental health perceptions and read a description of a person’s experiences who may or may not have a mental health difficulty. We estimate the survey will only take about  30 minutes of your time to complete. We know this sounds like a long time, but often people find completing these surveys interesting and we would appreciate your contribution to our study. The types of questions you will be asked include those that survey your beliefs about mental health problems, the reasons that people have certain experiences, and what you think about seeking help for these experiences.

Are there any risks, inconveniences or discomforts for me if I take part?
Completing the survey carries minimal risk for you. We know that completing the survey may be a small burden on your time and therefore we appreciate your contribution. The likelihood of experiencing distress from this survey is low. However, the questions concern mental health so some people may feel uncomfortable for themselves or someone they know. If this happens, please know that you can contact the researchers with any questions that you have. Alternatively you may wish to remain anonymous and can approach these free crisis support services if you become upset: Lifeline - 13 11 14. Beyond Blue - 1300 22 4636.Headspace - 1800 650 890.

Taking part in this research is purely voluntary and other than contributing towards ongoing research there is no personal benefit to yourself. Often people enjoy completing these questionnaires! If you choose not to take part your relationship with the researchers involved or the University of Wollongong will not be affected in any way. Given that the questionnaire is completed anonymously, it will not be possible for you to withdraw your responses once they have been submitted. However, you are free to stop completing the survey at any time you wish.
