English Español Creating safer streets for kids surveyDistrict 2 (James John Elementary School) In recent years, Portland has seen a surge in popularity around walk and bike buses, groups of parents and students who will bike or walk to school together, with people joining the bus along the way. There are over two dozen bike and walk buses in Portland, including the James John Bike Bus (pictured above).PBOT wants to support these community-grown buses and make their routes to school both safe and comfortable for kids. Last fall we worked with the James John school community, surrounding neighborhoods, and James John bike bus leaders to identify safety or comfort issues. We heard a lot of concern about stressful crossings, unsafe passing from people driving, and too many cars, particularly near the school between N Smith Ave and N Lombard Ave. Traffic counts also show volumes on N Charleston well above PBOT goals for neighborhood greenways, streets designed to prioritize people walking and biking.Based on that input, PBOT staff identified a diversion pilot project on N Charleston Avenue that will reduce car traffic and calm the street. N Charleston is a neighborhood greenway that directly serves James John Elementary, St. John’s Library, and the St. Johns Farmers Market. Four other locations for infrastructure improvements were also identified, some of which could be funded by North Portland in Motion, and some which would require additional, yet to be identified funding. On the following pages, you will be able to provide feedback on the pilot locations for diversion and on the other four project proposals. For more information on each of these proposals, please review the District 2 Treatment Proposals report. Details about the pilot can be found on the pilot website. The information you are providing on this form is available to the public through a public records request.
