Stakeholder Survey: Grade Expansion

The information gathered from this survey will be taken into consideration during conversations amongst the Board of Directors. This information will not be the sole determinant in whether the Board explores expansion.

In 2003, TrekNorth first opened with 160 students in grades 9-12. Currently, TrekNorth has 240 students in grades 6-12. The expansion of grades and number of students has contributed to our college preparatory programming, created financial stability, allowed us to design and build a much improved school facility, and created more flexibility with scheduling of both curricular and extra curricular programs.

One thing we’ve learned over the last decade is that the longer a student is at TrekNorth, the more successful they become. Because our program is both unique and demanding, it can be extraordinarily hard for students to leave one school system and quickly find success at TrekNorth. Additionally, TrekNorth tends to enroll a significant percentage of students who have fallen behind their peers academically, and getting them caught back up with their grade level can be a very complex problem.

The TrekNorth Board of Directors has considered that if TrekNorth were a K-12 school system, a greater percentage of students would achieve a greater degree of success, as we would work to insure that students never fell behind their peers in the first place, and we’d have a greater number of years to acclimate students and parents to the program and expectations of the school.

There is another side to school growth and expansion. Our student body has grown, as has our facility, making it harder to create and maintain a strong sense of community within the walls of the school. There are certainly benefits and consequences to the growth of an organization, and healthy organizations grow carefully and deliberately.

As the Board of Directors ponders the question of whether to expand, it would like feedback from the stakeholders of the school community. Please take a moment to consider this information, and submit your feedback with the following 1-question survey. If you’d like more information, please contact Executive Director Dan McKeon at 218-444-1888 or dmckeon@treknorth.org.

Please note that the question is not whether TrekNorth should expand, but whether the Board of Directors at TrekNorth should explore the possibility of expansion.

Are you in favor of the TrekNorth Board of Directors exploring the option of creating a K-12 system?
