James B. Greene Award

Motivator. Great-thinker. Influencer. Collaborator. Planner. Community Builder.

The evolution of a city is historically a tribute to the contributions of its people and those who unselfishly channel their unique energies. One of Orlando's great contributors is James B Greene.

A graduate of Orlando’s Boone Senior High School and a University of Florida graduate, Greene returned to Orlando after college to enter the insurance business. From his business beginnings as a field underwriter, through his success with James. B. Greene and Associates, he always felt a strong responsibility to his community. “Someone once called it civic tithing, dedicating a portion of your time to community, “ said Greene. “I’ve always gotten more out of it than I put in.” As a member, and most often leader, of nearly 20 civic organizations during his lifetime, Greene is probably best remembered for his chairmanships of the Orlando/Orange County Expressway Authority, the then-industrial Development Commission of Mid-Florida and the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce. His tireless dedication to the March of Dimes, Edgewood Children’s Ranch and Goodwill Industries attest to the breadth of this example.

He left a legacy of commitment, integrity and service and this award is a memorial to Jim Greene, a man who loved and selflessly served the community he called home.

The award is a symbol of gratitude that will be presented to an individual who has exhibited unselfish service to Central Florida’s economic well-being.
