City of Pittsfield Community Safe Speeds Program

Introduction

The City of Pittsfield is looking for your input on the Community Safe Speeds Program, a community-led initiative to identify and address speeding and traffic safety concerns on neighborhood streets.

The City is currently preparing Pittsfield Safety Action Plan (SAP), called “Safety in the Heart of the Berkshires.” This plan identifies the City’s High Injury Network (HIN)—the intersections and street corridors where the highest concentrations of fatal and serious-injury crashes occur. While addressing these locations will require long-term investments and capital improvements, the City can also take smaller, faster, and lower-cost actions to address speeding and improve safety for Pittsfield communities in the near term.

In tandem with developing the City’s Safety Action Plan, the City will be initiating Pittsfield’s Community Safe Speeds Program. The Community Safe Speeds Program will provide a way for residents and community members to identify locations where speeding or other traffic safety concerns are affecting their neighborhoods and help the City determine where traffic calming may be appropriate.
COMMUNITY SAFE SPEEDS PROGRAM DETAILS

ELIGIBLE STREETS All city-owned and maintained streets in Pittsfield
PROJECT INITIATION Initiated by resident or City; requests will be reviewed and selected annually
PROJECT PRIORITIZATION Project requests will be prioritized and selected based on history of speeding, vehicular volumes, crash history, surrounding land uses, and proximity to transit routes
PROJECT TYPES Spot treatments or corridor treatments that target vehicular speeding; treatments may include speed humps, curb extensions, traffic-calming islands, enhanced crossings, or other changes that encourage safer travel speeds
ANTICIPATED PROJECT FUNDING Approximately 5-10% of Chapter 90 funding annually
