A Global Survey on Botanical Gardens and Ecological Restoration Work

Thank you for taking part in this important global survey. This effort is part of a broader initiative to better understand and support the role of botanical gardens in ecological restoration for climate resilience. We are gathering insights from gardens at all stages of engagement, from those just beginning to explore this realm of work to those with long-standing programs. Your responses will help us document the current range and scope of restoration-related activities across the global botanical garden community.

This survey is intended to be completed by a garden representative who has, or can reliably gather, information on the strategic direction of the garden and its current and past project work. The respondent may be from any relevant department, such as horticulture, science, education, or community engagement. We ask that each institution coordinate to submit one consolidated response on behalf of the garden.

This survey is conducted jointly by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). It serves dual purposes. First, it supports the Nurturing Nature Initiative, a collaborative effort to activate the potential of botanical gardens in delivering scalable, plant-based climate resilience solutions. Second, it gathers information on ERA members’ progress and accomplishments over the past five years as the 2021–2025 strategy period comes to a close, along with input on priorities for the next five years.

Survey findings will be shared through a public summary report distributed to all participants who complete the survey. Respondents will also receive early access to insights and recommendations through the Nurturing Nature Initiative’s Action Plan and accompanying paper, expected to be released in the second half of 2026.

The survey's original deadline has passed (29th August), however it will remain open for responses. The survey should take 15 minutes or less to complete. For questions related to the survey, please reach out to egrover@nybg.org or david.bartholomew@bgci.org.

Please note that this survey is being circulated by BGCI. The data will be shared with NYBG for analysis, but not personal information, unless consent is given. Consent can be withdrawn at any time by contacting egrover@nybg.org.
