What is Positive Ageing?

In 2007 the World Health Organisation produced a report titled 'Global Age-Friendly Cities: A Guide' following extensive consultation across 33 cities world-wide.

This report describes an age-friendly city as one that ‘encourages active ageing by optimising opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age. In practical terms, an age-friendly city adapts its structures and services to be accessible to and inclusive of older people with varying needs and capacities.’

Our Journey to the Positive Ageing Strategy

Council’s first positive ageing strategy Ageing is About Living was endorsed in 2012.  This draft Positive Ageing Strategy 2017-25 builds on the achievements of Ageing is About Living and has been developed following the formation of the Positive Ageing Advisory Committee and consultation with the community.

In 2016 Council undertook extensive consultation which included face to face interviews, written surveys, online surveys and interactive forums and events.  The Positive Ageing Advisory Committee contributed to the consultation and provided significant input into the development of the draft Strategy.  Service providers and peak bodies were also consulted.

What is Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy?

The draft Positive Ageing Strategy 2017-25 guides the development, management and future directions of Council in regards to our ageing population.

It aims to ensure members of the Greater Dandenong community remain fit and active, and that residents can continue living independently in the community for as long as they are able.

The draft Strategy converts good intentions into actions. It focuses on achieving positive outcomes in the areas identified through community consultation as follows:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings
  • Transportation
  • Housing
  • Respect and social inclusion
  • Social participation
  • Civic participation and employment
  • Communication and information
  • Community support and health services.

The draft Strategy assists in creating a community where older people live safely, enjoy good health and contribute actively to the City of Greater Dandenong.
