School Application to Participate in Professional Learning in School Teams

The Math and Science Bureau of the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) is ecstatic to offer professional learning (PL) supporting Grades 4–12 mathematics instruction in public schools! The MSB invites New Mexico schools to apply to participate in school team professional learning leveraging high quality instructional materials (HQIM), pedagogy and formative assessments to foster equitable classroom environments.

School teams are invited to apply for any combination of professional learning activities to support them in:
  • Math Foundations - An Early Numeracy Initiative grades in 4–5;
  • Enhancing Math Formative Assessment in grades 9–12; and/or
  • Fostering Positive Math Identity in grades 6–12.

A school team includes:
  • One school/district/charter administrator or instructional coach who is responsible for providing professional learning,
  • One school/district/charter instructional leader who is able to make school decisions, and
  • Fifty (50%) of school staff responsible for mathematics instruction in the school.
Math Foundations-An Early Numeracy Initiative (Grades 4–5)

Enhancing Math Formative Assessment (Grades 9–12)


School teams will engage in 42 hours of professional learning throughout the school year, including a six-hour virtual kick-off and three, two-day face-to-face regional convenings during the 2021–2022 school year. Professional learning will engage educators so they are active participants in learning while supporting administrators/instructional coaches/teacher leaders to build capacity in continuing the work.

The 42 hours of professional learning will include:
  • Participation and full engagement in 42 hours of PL tentatively scheduled from December 2021 through May 2022.
  • Collaboration virtually/face-to-face with colleagues and a vendor on an ongoing basis;
  • Receive a stipend for full engagement with your school team (stipend paid for off contract hours only). Substitute reimbursements are available for face to face convenings occurring on school days.

Fostering Positive Math Identities (Grades 6–12)

School teams will engage in 16 hours of synchronous and asynchronous professional learning throughout the 2nd semester, including four, four-hour sessions during school hours. Professional learning will engage educators so they are active participants in learning while supporting administrators/instructional coaches/teacher leaders to build capacity in continuing the work. Sessions may include webinars, small groups of participants, small groups of schools, or professional learning communities (PLC) work as determined by the participating schools’ needs and scheduled around staff availability, including during contract and non-contract times.

The 16 hours of professional learning will include:
  • Participation and full engagement in 16 hours of PL virtually, tentatively scheduled from January–April/May 2022;
  • Collaboration virtually with colleagues and a vendor on an ongoing basis;
  • Receive a stipend for full engagement with your school team (stipend paid for off contract hours only). Substitute reimbursements are available for virtual convenings occurring during school hours.
Expectations of the PED, district staff, principals, and teachers

The PED will maintain open lines of communication with participating district and school staff to support understanding of project expectations and to provide technical assistance as needed.

The PED will:
  • Pay participating educators a stipend for complete and active participation, as outlined in The Teacher(s) Will section
  • Provide substitute reimbursements for face-to-face/virutal convenings occurring during school hours
  • Provide mileage reimbursement and lodging for educators who are traveling more than 60 miles one way to the closet regional convening (only for face-to-face convenings)
  • Coordinate with vendors and school teams to schedule sessions
District staff/Principals will:
  • Ensure that the participating teachers have release time during or after school to fully engage in virtual/face-to-face professional learning
  • Participate with the school team in professional learning activities
  • Ensuring conditions, i.e. technology and time, make it possible for teachers to participate in all required activities
  • Ensure all teachers meet their respective responsibilities as outlined in the The Teacher(s) Will section to remain compliance with project expectations
  • Participate in all evaluation activities associated with the project during the 2021–22 school year
Teacher(s) will:
  • Actively participate in all professional learning events (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Participate in all evaluation activities associated with the project during the 2021–22 school year
