Welcome to the CAFC 2026 Call for Committees - part 1

Overview
The CAFC is pleased to release its 2026 Call for Committee Members.

This year, we will have 2 calls for committees. We are pleased to tell you about both and issue the first call below.

The first call for committees relates to committees that are continuing from 2025 in their current form beginning in February.

Eligible members (Chief Officer and Company Officers) in good standing can join these committees at this time as existing committee continue. All other individuals in other membership categories interested in CAFC committees will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We will help new members come up to speed.

Existing members do not need to take any action unless you would like to update or change your information or your status on the committee.

For French-speaking Committee members, the CAFC is able to purchase simultaneous translation software as needed for those who wish the participate in French. We hope this will encourage French-speaking members to participate.

The second call for committees will take place once we complete the strategic plan. This will include modified forms of existing committees that may change in their format or scope due to the strategic plan and entirely new committees.

Thank you again to all members and our committees. These committees are the program and policy engine of the CAFC. We hope that they give all members opportunity to help their own organizations while helping others, the sector and the system. We truly look forward to your participation if your time, interest, and inclination allow.

Building Codes Committee
This Committee is meeting on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM ET

Changes to the codes commission includes better engagement with the fire sector, the firefighter safety objective in the code, and levelling the playing field with industry. It’s now up to CAFC to monitor, organize and influence. This committee will continue to monitor National Building Code developments and provide CAFC input and influence. In addition to monitoring the NBC, this committee will also continue its work on its Fire and Life Safety for All in the Built Environment project for Accessibility Standards Canada, and look at issues relating to the federal government's plan to fast track rapid-build housing, including single egress.
Cancer Prevention:
This Committee is meeting on the 1st Tuesday of every month at 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

In 2026, this committee will continue to focus on firefighter cancer awareness, creating a train the trainer model for the Rapid Response in Firefighter Cancer for fire departments, as well as a version for firefighters, and monitoring the implementation of the firefighter cancer framework.
Census and Data:
This Committee is meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET

The Great Canadian Fire Census has become a signature initiative of the CAFC. The 2026 edition creates opportunity for new questions and explanations as well as new methods of analyzing the data and provides evidence to our policy asks. The Census will be administered again in 2026 with new questions and repeated questions for tracking purposes. This committee will also look at other fire sector data related issues that may be outside of the scope of the census.
Climate
This Committee is meeting on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

Fire departments are now dealing with more climate emergencies than before, beyond the traditional structure fires. This committee looks at issues related to climate emergencies and the fire service, including wildfire, wildfire training, and fire department's role in other non-wildfire climate emergencies like earthquake and floods.
Dangerous Goods:
This Committee is meeting on the 4th Thursday of every month at 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET

CAFC’s Dangerous Goods Committee handles all issues related to dangerous goods, hazardous materials, industry, and transportation. The committee develops regulations, responds to consultations, and disseminates information. CAFC is part of the General Policy Advisory Council of Transport Canada. As part of this function, it advises Transport Canada alongside 35 other members on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. The committee also takes on contracted initiatives and monitors issues like Dissemination of the Emergency Response Guide Book; Canadian Emergency Response Flammable Liquids in Training program; Ask Rail App; Lithium-ion batteries; Explosives.
Emergency Management/Authorities Having Jurisdiction:
This Committee is meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

While many organizations wish to partake as part of Civilian response corps few have MOUs in place with fire departments, which make execution of this popular phenomenon difficult. This Committee provides templates and guidelines for this, with our guideline with Humane Canada will be used as an initial template. We envision a draft MOU between fire departments and non-governmental organizations and the policy commentary on civilian response workforces.
Executive Chief Fire Officer:
This Committee is meeting on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET

The ECFO Council monitors and executes the Executive Chief Officer and Executive Chiefs Officer Aspire program. In 2026, the council will determine its vision and strategy for the program in 2026-2030, explore sustainability of the assessor modalities, and market the program. A “boot camp” will be developed to help candidates through the program will also be developed and launched. You must have your ECFO to join the Council.
Leadership Development:
This Committee is meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET

As a result of Census 2022-2023, CAFC identified a gap in leadership development programs because of funding shortfalls in fire departments and is developing free programs. Level I (lead self) was delivered in 2025 and will be adapted for asynchronous delivery in 2026. Level II (lead others) is currently going through a call for Speakers for delivery to begin in 2026. Level III (lead organizations) will be developed.
