Addressing the needs of Students on the Spectrum for Special Education Services

The Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) and several NOFAS (National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) affiliates have come together to advocate for better educational outcomes for students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).  Special thanks to task force members Sara Messelt (MOFAS), Eileen Bisgaard (NOFAS-Colorado), Sr. Suzette Fisher (Double ARC, NOFAS Ohio), Janet Sharkis (Texas Office for the Prevention of Developmental Disabilities), Eileen Bisgaard (NOFAS Colorado), Chris Troutt (The Papillion Center for FASD), and Jennifer Faringer (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence-Rochester NY).  Thank you also to Ruth Richardson, Director of Programs, and Shauna Feine, Training Coordinator, (MOFAS) for their assistance in this project.

Students that are impacted by prenatal exposure to alcohol and those who have a diagnosis on the FASD spectrum often face many challenges in school.  Some students with an FASD may qualify for special education services.  However, there is a general lack of understanding of FASD and the best approaches that should be used to achieve good educational outcomes for this population.  This survey has been designed to better understand the experiences of students with an FASD, their parents and caregivers, and professionals involved in this field.  We acknowledge the lack of diagnostic services available throughout the country, and so encourage individuals and their caregivers to complete the survey if they have a diagnosis or if they suspect that they are impacted by prenatal exposure to alcohol.

The information collected from this survey is intended for policy makers, schools, service providers, community organizations, and advocacy groups to better understand and address the needs of individuals on the spectrum in education.  If you have any questions on the survey, please reach out to sara@mofas.org.

This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
