The Santa Cruz County Parks Department wants your feedback on future projects at Floral Park!

Over the past year, the park has received several upgrades, including:
  • Brand-new play structure and rubberized surface
  • Pollinator garden
  • Tide pools art
  • New ADA-accessible path
  • New benches
  • New water fountain
We've received additional community requests for a half basketball court and a more structured dog play area.

Generous local donors have offered to fund construction of the half basketball court if it is approved by the Santa Cruz County Parks Commission. Funding does not currently exist for other improvements, however any change begins with an update to the park's Master Plan.

So today we'd like your vote on which version of the Floral Park Master Plan you prefer.
Option A: Retain the Current Master Plan

current master plan

The Current Master Plan includes features that have not yet been built including a fenced dog exercise area at the north end of the park, a 5 foot cement walk around the unprogrammed lawn area, a sidewalk along the outside of the park on 38th Ave and a larger swing set adjacent to the playground.
Option B: Add a Half Basketball Court

This option would add a half basketball court adjacent to the playground area while maximizing open lawn area. This would create space for older kids and youth to play. This design includes five additional trees that would provide some shade for the court area and two concrete benches. It also includes a pollinator garden between the existing path and the basketball court to provide a natural screen that prevents balls from rolling into peoples' way. Artistic options are being considered for the basketball court that would tie it in with the marine theme of the playground. This plan removes the concrete walk around the lawn area, envisioned in the current master plan, to keep the lawn as large as possible.
Option C: Add a Half Basketball Court and a Dog Exercise Area

This design includes all of the same features as Option B as well as a fenced dog exercise area. It also includes a decomposed granite (DG) walking path to connect the two areas. The compromise is that the unprogrammed lawn area shrinks in this design.
Option D: Add a Dog Exercise Area

Dog Park

This option only includes a fenced dog exercise area at the north end of the park. A decomposed granite (DG) walking path would be added to connect the dog exercise area and the existing path. A pollinator garden would be added to screen the existing path as would a few trees. Compared to the current Master Plan, this option only has a path on one side of the lawn to maximize size and has a larger dog exercise area with a rectangular design.
