They Persisted for Suffrage, by Ellen DuBois. The long, embattled history of women’s suffrage that began with the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention continues to this day.

The Rise and Fall of the Bootleg King, by Bob Batchelor. A whiskey baron who murdered his wife in a jealous rage, George Remus led a life that embodied both the opulence and violence of Prohibition.

“I Am in Birmingham Because Injustice is Here", by Bruce Watson. Written while he was jailed for leading nonviolent demonstrations, King's open letter defined the Civil Rights movement.

Henry Ford's Bungle in the Jungle, by Mark Callaghan. He was one of America's greatest innovators, but his plan to build a production city in the Amazon ultimately ended in disaster.

Searching for “Shenandoah”, by Bruce Watson. It's one of the oldest folk ballads in our national songbook, but where did it come from? The answer is complex, multi-layered, American.

Chasing History: A Kid in the Newsroom, by Eugene Meyer. A colleague reviews Carl Bernstein's memoirs and recalls on the Watergate era at the Washington Post.

“Times That Try Men’s Souls”, by Harlow Giles UngerThe words of Thomas Paine changed the course of history, and are still relevant as Ukrainians fight for the rights he articulated.

Putin and the Lessons of History: A Special Section, by Edwin S. GrosvenorVladimir Putin used historical references and a claim of fighting “fascism” to justify war on Ukraine, despite his own glaring Hitlerian behavior.

It's Not a Stalemate; It's a War, by Lucian K. Truscott IV. It’s too impersonal to call what’s happening in Ukraine a “stalemate” when cities are reduced to rubble and thousands of civilians murdered.

Bob Dole and the Nazis’ Brutal Last Stand in Italy, by Edwin S. Grosvenor. Allied soldiers struggled for months to clear veteran German troops dug into the mountains of northern Italy in late 1944 and early 1945.

American Rebels at Sea, by Eric Jay Dolin. An estimated fifteen hundred privateering ships played a crucial role in winning the American Revolution, but their contributions are often forgotten.

The Black Woman Who Managed Morgan's Millions, by Bruce Watson. Born during Jim Crow, Belle da Costa Greene perfected the art of "passing" while working for one of the most powerful men in America.

Discovering American History in Britain, by Sam Edwards. From ancestral homes of George Washington to World War II runways, there are many sites in the U.K. where you can encounter American's past.

When Abortion Roiled 19th Century New York, by Kenneth D. Ackerman. Long before Roe vs. Wade, the practice of abortion led to fierce political conflict and public health problems in 1870s America.

The Man Who Brought Opera to America, by Howard Jay Smith. Lorenzo Da Ponte was a Jewish-born Catholic priest who wrote libretti for Mozart and eventually helped open the first opera house in New York.

Antietam, America's Bloodiest Day, by Justin Martin. In September 1862, the South hoped to end the war by invading Maryland just before the mid-term elections. But its hopes were dashed after the bloodiest day in American history.

Johnstown: “Run For Your Lives!”, by David McCullough. In the hills above Johnstown, the old South Fork dam had failed. Down the Little Conemaugh came the torrent, sweeping away everything in its path.

Remembering David McCullough, by Edwin S. Grosvenor. He became the dean of American historians after learning his craft working five years on the staff of American Heritage.

Carving Up the Americas, by Neal Asbury, Jean-Pierre Isbouts. By artfully illustrating the boundaries of colonial powers, mapmakers in the 1700s helped define what our New World would become.

Italia Crashes in the Arctic, by Mark Piesing. In 1928, an attempt to land the first men on the North Pole ended in tragedy when the airship Italia crashed, sparking the largest polar-rescue mission in history.

“Freedom is in My Soul”, by Keisha N. Blain. The legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer’s life was her belief that the United States could indeed live up to its ideals.

Discovering Doc Watson, by Keith Fitzgerald. The blind guitarist and singer from Deep Gap, North Carolina transformed American music by blending bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel.

Buffalo Bill and the Duel at Warbonnet Creek, by Steve Wiegand. William Cody established his reputation during a celebrated clash with Yellow Hair.

The Dartmoor Massacre, by Nicholas Guyatt. British jailers murdered American prisoners several months after the end of the War of 1812 in the last act of hostility between the U.K. and the United States.

In the Orchard of Dolores Huerta, by Bruce Watson. Fighting for labor rights in California's Central Valley, Dolores Clara Fernandez Huerta took up la causa in the name of children.

The Best Presidential Insults, by Mike Purdy. Our leading politicians have spewed vitriol at each other since the nation’s founding.

Our Readers Choose: Favorite Books of 2021, by Edwin S. Grosvenor. Interestingly, most of the 2021 books voted best by readers of American Heritage are about the Colonial and Founding eras.

The Founders Warned Us Against Federal Debt, by Bill White. Political leaders once agreed that the U.S. should borrow only for well-defined purposes. But in the last twenty years, we’ve ignored their guidance and added a staggering $25 trillion to the federal debt.

FDR Unites America for War, by Peter Shinkle. Adding Republicans to key positions in his administration, Franklin Roosevelt created a unified effort to fight World War II.

The Ultimate Congressional Scandal, by Robert Mitchell. Crédit Mobilier, one of the worst outrages in the history of Congress, affected national elections and gave “the Gilded Age” its name.

Stormy Weather for Queen Elizabeth, by Selwa Roosevelt. Rain put a damper on Queen Elizabeth II's 1983 trip to California.

Haunted by Authors: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, by Greg Melville. Famous writers including Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, and the Alcotts turned Sleepy Hollow Cemetery into our country’s first conservation project.

What Can We Learn from Losing Presidential Candidates?, by Peter Shea. From Henry Clay to Barry Goldwater and Shirley Chisholm, our failed presidential contenders can still inspire us with their legacies.
