Thank you for your input toward the design of the St. George Rainway!

We are excited to announce that the St. George Rainway Project group will be working with the City of Vancouver this year to develop a more detailed design and cost estimate for a section of the St. George Rainway. Once the design is done we will be in a better position to advocate for funding to make the project a reality.

In anticipation of this work, we are seeking your feedback and input on the Rainway to help identify the neighbourhood’s priorities, ideas, and any potential concerns.

The St. George Rainway is a community driven initiative that has been active since 2010. If you are not familiar with the Rainway project, we encourage you to check out this overview of the project on our website here (opens in new window). Our goal is to use rainwater runoff from adjacent properties, the street, and connecting laneways to recreate a historic stream as part of a "Rainway" along St. George Street from Kingsway to the False Creek Flats. In our vision for the Rainway the existing underground storm pipe would remain in place, and a part of the street right of way would be converted into a linear park.

The following questions will help inform The Rainway group on how best to represent the wishes of the community as we continue our conversations with City staff.

* 1. Before receiving this survey, were you familiar with the St. George Rainway Project?

* 2. The following are some goals that we’ve identified for the project to date; which do you think should be the priority goals? (select up to 3)

First Choice Second Choice Third Choice
Create a safe and attractive walking and biking route, especially for children to get to one of the three local elementary schools along the route
Build neighbourhood connections by providing a public gathering space for the community
Provide a “living lab” for students at local schools to learn about and experience ecology
Showcase for public art and community projects
Create a biodiversity corridor that can support birds and pollinators

* 3. What would you like to see, do, or experience along the St. George Rainway?

* 4. One of the goals of The Rainway is to treat water as a valuable resource rather than a waste product. What are some ways you would like to see this happen in your community?

* 5. For the block of St. George Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, we are proposing to reduce the width of the street. There are several different ways that this can happen in order to keep travel lanes and/or parking lanes. Which of the following options would you prefer? Click here for an illustration of the options (opens in new window)

* 6. To what extent do you agree with the idea of having a Rainway on St. George Street?

* 7. Our vision is for the Rainway to extend from Kingsway in the south, to Great Northern Way in the north, but we recognize it will need to be built incrementally. Which block(s) do you think are the best to start with and why? See a schematic plan view of the Rainway here (opens in new window); note that North is to the right.

* 8. Do you have any concerns about the Rainway? (indicate all that apply)

* 9. Please name the nearest local street intersection to where you live (e.g. St. George Street and 10th Avenue)

* 10. We will be organizing a Community Design Workshop this summer to get more detailed ideas and feedback from the neighbourhood. If you would like to attend this Design Session, or you would like more information, please leave us your email address.

Also, if you are interested in attending rainway networking/planning meetings held about once a month in the community on Sundays at 11:00 am, please type "CORE" after your email address.

Thank you for your input to this community endeavour.
