This presentation will compare the effects of ultrasonic welding of a hi-temp thermoplastic (polyetherimide) exhaust system to the metallic chassis structure versus traditional metallic weld of a stainless steel exhaust system. Properties to be compared from the weld quality analysis include impact resistance, tensile/compressive strength, operating temperature, service life, and cycle time. Recommended joining methods will be presented and examples of in-service applications will be covered that show a high performance and cost effective solution is possible using thermoplastic composites.
