your Transfer Stations

In July/August we asked which services matter most, and where changes could be made, to help keep rates affordable. Your feedback has helped shape proposals to reduce service costs and the amount funded through rates.

What we are proposing

After considering the feedback from the Community, the Council is proposing to close the Ongarue and Ōwhango transfer stations.

Note that due to contractual arrangements, these transfer stations may operate through until 2030.
Key points
  • Council proposes closing Ongarue and Ōwhango transfer stations.
  • Most people served by these sites are within 20 kilometres of another transfer station.
  • Estimated savings over 10 years: $220,000 at Ongarue and $500,000 at Ōwhango — $720,000 combined.
  • In the July/August survey, 59% thought Council operated too many small rural transfer stations; 26% disagreed and 15% were unsure.
