your Public Toilets

In July/August we asked which services matter most, and where changes could be made, to help keep rates affordable. Your feedback has helped shape proposals to reduce service costs and the amount funded through rates.

What are we proposing

Council is proposing to:

• Close the Carrol Street (Waimarino), Tangiwai and Ameku Road (Raetihi) public toilets.
• Introduce a user charge at the State Highway 1 public toilet in Waiouru (this would require investment for the charging system that Council maybe able to obtain external funding for).

These facilities have been identified following analysis of usage levels, operating costs and the availability of alternative facilities nearby.
Key points
  • Council proposes closing toilets at Carroll Street (Waimarino), Tangiwai and Ameku Road (Raetihi).
  • Toilet closures could save approximately $600,000 over 10 years.
  • The proposal considers usage, operating costs and nearby alternatives.
  • Other toilets are available in Raetihi and at Waimarino’s Park ’n’ Ride.
  • Tangiwai toilets have low use and repeated theft of solar power equipment.
  • Council also proposes a user charge at Waiouru’s SH1 toilets, one of the district’s busiest facilities.
  • Waiouru toilets cost approximately $1.35 million to operate over 10 years.
  • Charging revenue is uncertain. Installing a payment system would cost money; external funding may be available.
