The Picnic Valley Neighborhood, one of the older neighborhoods in San Rafael, is located east of Gerstle Park. The neighborhood is developed with a mix of residential uses, featuring apartments and condominiums in the area near Davidson School, and single-family homes and some duplex units in the hillside areas. Access to the hillside homes is provided by very narrow streets, alleyways or pedestrian-only “walks.” This is a unique feature within this neighborhood.   The hillside area of the neighborhood, Southern Heights, was formerly farmland. This area experiences “through” traffic as motorists use Wolfe Grade to access the adjacent industrial area and downtown.
