ABA therapy (treatment using the principles of applied behavior analysis) is the primary evidence-based treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, many families struggle to obtain access to this critical service. In October 2016, Easterseals Midwest conducted an initial survey to understand the experiences of families with insurance coverage for ABA in Missouri. Over half of the responding families had to limit or deny their child’s ABA treatment because of excessive out-of-pocket costs. Specifically, the co-pays required for each treatment session were the most challenging for families (on average families had 12 co-pays per month).
We are in the process of seeking solutions to reduce out-of-pocket costs for ABA treatment.  We have shared our concerns with the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration and they have begun collecting data so they may monitor and report on cost-sharing impacts and trends.  To complement the Department’s information and to give a full understanding of the impact of cost-sharing on families, it is important that we update the 2016 survey.

By completing this brief survey (10-15 minutes), you will assist our efforts to improve access to ABA treatment in Missouri. In particular, the additional information/comments you share will be valuable in pursuing solutions so that more children will have access to affordable care.

Thank you for contributing your input to this important survey!
