Peru - Amazon Rotation Application for 2023 |
NOTE: THIS IS THE APPLICATION FOR THE AMAZON ROTATION IN FEBRUARY/MARCH 2023.
DUE TO RESTRICTIONS ON AWAY ROTATIONS BECAUSE OF COVID19 AND THE HEALTH RISK OF PRACTICING IN A VERY RESOURCE LIMITED SETTING WHICH IS EXPERIENCING A HIGH FATALITY RATE THIS ROTATION MAY BE CANCELED AT ANY TIME. THE EXPERIENCES MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT IS DESCRIBED BELOW. WHILE NOT REQUIRED BY THE SCHOOL AT THIS TIME, AT THE TIME OF THE ROTATION PROOF OF SARS-COV2 VACCINATION MAY BE REQUIRED BY:
A. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY HOMER STRYKER MD SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.
B. ANY VESTED USA BASED ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE STATE DEPARTMENT, THE CDC, ACGME, AAMC AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
C. THE PERUVIAN GOVERNMENT AND ANY INVOLVED PERUVIAN BASED ORGANIZATIONS.
The Western Michigan University School of Medicine Global Health Program's clinical experience in the Amazon region of Northern Peru will take place in block 9 (from February to March 2023 - Students should be able to return in time for match week). The rotation will include extensive pre-travel preparation. The first few days in Peru experiences may vary and may include visits to hospitals and health care systems and the US Naval research lab in vector borne diseases in Iquitos. The final two weeks will take place in providing primary and acute care in remote communities along the upper Amazon, Ucayale and/or Marañón rivers. Spanish fluency is desirable but not required as translators will be available. Optional one on one or group Spanish language instruction is offered at an additional cost. Lodging conditions vary from year to year and may be very rustic. The Amazon is home to a plethora of insects. Participants should be comfortable with and adaptable to a variety of challenging environmental situations. Space is limited. THIS APPLICATION IS DUE July 31, 2023.
