1. Registration Information

Thank you for your interest in Islands of Brilliance Summer Design workshops! We ask that you please review the following criteria to ensure that your son/daughter is an appropriate candidate.

Workshop Model: Workshops are designed around our students strengths giving them every opportunity to have a happy, successful learning experience. Workshops are limited to eight students. Each student is matched 1 : 1 with a mentor—volunteers from the professional creative services industry. Classes are led by an experienced Special Education teacher, with additional support staff such as a Creative Director, Art Buddy, and SPED Buddy. The experience also incorporates the opportunity for breaks including hands-on art activities and quiet down-time if needed.
Workshop Objective: Students will participate and be introduced to the following learning experiences, social interactions, and technical skill sets:

  • Open social sharing time at the beginning of each workshop
  • Idea and concept development
  • Problem solving
  • Collaboration
  • Sketching
  • Visual Research
  • Design and production using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Time Management
  • Project update sharing
  • Presentation Skills

Over the course of the five 75 minute workshops, student/mentor teams will concept, sketch, design, and present their final poster. Posters will be shipped to students via mail, generally arriving two weeks after completion of the workshop.

Our students are expected to:

1. Be able to sit for a minimum of 15 minutes and then return to work after a short break.
2. Be able to follow verbal directions with minimal visual support. (In our workshops, students work side by side with a professional from the creative field. Special Education supervision is provided as support.)
3. Be comfortable using a mouse (including clicking, dragging, etc.).
4. Be able to access information—such as finding images for his/her project—using a browser window.
