Welcome!

NAMI CA is currently collecting information from affiliates, individuals, families and community members regarding experiences with IMD facilities. Information shared will be gathered and presented to DHCS regarding the IMD Waiver.

An Institution for Mental Disease (IMD) is a hospital, nursing facility, residential or inpatient facility with more than 16 beds, where individuals are primarily receiving care for a mental illness.

An IMD is categorized as a facility that is primarily engaged in providing diagnosis, treatment, or care of persons with mental diseases, including medical attention, nursing care, and related services. IMDs are long term care psychiatric facilities, licensed by state departments of health care services or state mental health departments, that are contracted to provide care for persons who no longer meet criteria for acute care but are not clinically ready to live in a board and care facility or to live independently.
