Climate Pledge

Energy: Improve energy efficiency in my home and use less energy

Transportation: Reduce car trips per week by choosing to combine trips or get there by walking, biking, carpooling, or using mass transit.

Waste: Reduce what I throw away by increasing my recycling, composting, re-using, re-purposing, and the purchasing of more durable goods—or not purchasing it in the first place!

Adaptation: Establish a household emergency plan for floods, heat emergencies and other natural disasters.

Sustainable Lifestyle: Support my local economy by shopping closer to home, eating more locally produced food, gardening and/or participating in CSA’s and farmers markets.

Energy: Since Iowa City is a community where nearly all electricity will be generated by wind, I will consider switching from gas to electric when replacing appliances and systems in my home.

Transportation: Consider a low or zero-emissions vehicle the next time I purchase (or rent) a car.

Waste: Promote less waste by setting up a composting bin in my garden, participating in existing repurposing networks like Iowa City Freecycle or setting up a repair café as described in the Iowa City Climate Action Toolkit.

Adaptation: Take note of the most vulnerable people in my immediate neighborhood and commit to checking in on them in times of emergencies and making sure they have the information they need to stay safe and healthy.

Sustainable Lifestyle: Commit to eating a plant-rich diet for the majority of my meals.
