Thank you for your interest in applying for a British Council scholarship to attend the IATEFL conference in April 2019. Please read the following information carefully, before you complete the application form.

The annual conference of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) takes place each year in the UK. The conference attracts over 3,000 English teachers from around the world. In 2019, the conference will be in Liverpool in the north of England. It is an excellent opportunity to improve your teaching of English, share your own experiences and meet new teachers from around the world. The British Council is offering a small number of scholarships for teachers from South Asia to attend the conference. The scholarships will cover the following costs: conference registration, travel, visa fee, accommodation and and meals. Scholarship winners will need to pay for any additional expenses.

Essential criteria for scholarships

All potential applicants must:

  • be living/working in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan or Nepal
  • be of Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Pakistani or Nepali nationality
  • be a teacher or teacher educator
  • teach English or train teachers of English
  • be working in a school or institution that is funded by your government
  • hold a valid passport
  • have not previously been refused a visa to enter the UK
  • have not previously been supported by the British Council to attend an international conference
  • be available to travel between 31 March and 6 April 2019 inclusive
  • demonstrate at least B1 level of English on the CEFR scale through their application
For all applicants meeting the essential criteria, final selection will be based on answers given to question #15 and #16 on the application form.
