They operate with a high degree of autonomy and have delegated authority to make commitments that have significant implications to financial performance and business risk. They have personal accountability for results and regular interface with senior executives.

Characteristics for high complexity operational roles are that situations involve multiple stakeholders and typically include several contract relationships, many of which involve extensive negotiation or on-going management of non-standard terms, changes or disputes. Examples would include outsourcing, alliances, teaming arrangements or multi-product / service 'solutions'. Contracts are often based on the other side's standards or starting from a blank sheet. The situations entail major business risks and exceptions require that personal interface with top-level company executives. The role demands creativity and frequently leads to incremental opportunities, and carries personal accountability for achieving expected results. Characteristics for high complexity strategy / development roles are that they involve complex projects that result in significant business improvements or change. The projects or relationships must be sponsored by top-level company executives with whom there is personal interface as project leader.

Medium: Individuals in this category operate with significant autonomy and delegated authority to make commitments, but within a more narrow range of contract or project types, and normally interfacing with mid / senior level management (not top executives).

Operational roles will typically involve multiple stakeholders (internal and/or external) and may involve several contract relationships. Individuals working at this level handle high risk terms and situations within a prescribed level of authority. They operate with significant autonomy in determining the commitments acceptable to the company, managing changes, handling disputes etc. Examples would include individuals responsible for high value product or service contracts, or operating as the contracts expert in a negotiation or contract management team. Strategy / development roles involve personal leadership / accountability for mid-level projects and initiatives that result in significant business value and are sponsored by the function leader or other executive management (outside the function).

Low: Individuals in this category are working under regular management guidance and performing tasks as instructed. They operate with limited autonomy and personal authority to make or change commitments.

They do not have extensive direct interface with executive management outside their own function or department. Tasks are typically undertaken as part of a team, or in accordance with documented procedures. Output is generally supervised / reviewed by others.
