Question Title

* 1. How many of your staff are currently engaged in training?

Having staff in training and development not only leads to better technical skills for your team but it also to greater overall staff engagement and therefore lower staff turnover. Staff who are in the habit of engaging with training will also be able to pick up new skills faster in the long term, saving you money and leading to better results on your bottom line.

Question Title

* 2. How many of your most recent roles have been filled by promoting someone from within?

Being able to promote your staff from within your business is clearly significantly cheaper than looking for skilled staff via recruitment agencies and overseas. As the pipeline of migrants slows in NZ, now is the ideal time to look again at the people already in your business. Over time you will gain a reputation for being an employer who promotes and looks after its staff.

Question Title

* 3. How often do you engage in coaching conversations with your team to give constructive feedback?

Engaging in coaching conversations to provide staff feedback will have positive long-term benefits for staff innovation and their ability to improve their own outputs. Using coaching as part of a structured training programme is a good way to cement behaviour across different layers of the business.

Question Title

* 4. How confident is your team to speak up and offer ideas on how to do things better?

Staff who speak up are confident to raise safety and quality issues in a timely, constructive way. If you’re not hearing from all your staff, you’re likely missing out on valuable feedback to improve health and safety and quality.

Question Title

* 5. How generous is your training and development budget?

Training budgets for many are stretched at this time and Government funding can be the kickstarter money needed to take some of the first steps. Recent announcements have seen the NZ Government increase its investment in vocational training programmes for businesses and organisations. This includes literacy and numeracy training, industry- qualifications and team leadership qualifications. A good training provider will be able to advise you on what funding pots are available to you.
