Case for Reform

Introdution

Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew is bringing forward a Members Bill which will extend the time period whereby the NI Housing Executive must support people threatened with homelessness.

The consultation will begin on May 7th and closes on July 30th.

The bill will extend the time period under which the Housing Executive has a legal obligation to support people threatened with homelessness from 28 days to at least 60 days.

This means the housing Executive will be required to work with people who are
threatened by homelessness at an earlier stage.

Under the Housing (NI) Order 1988, the Housing Executive is legally obliged to support anyone threatened by homelessness when it appears likely that they will become homeless within the next 28 days.

Homelessness can be triggered by many different things, often times unexpectedly, but the most common reasons for homelessness include; a private landlord serving a notice to quit, the repossession of a property, losing a job where the employer provides accommodation, or relationship breakdowns within families.
