The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program (NMHWMP) was established in 2006 to raise awareness and celebrate the ways women in our past have shaped the unique, multicultural heritage of New Mexico in pursuits as diverse as the arts, business, education, healthcare, public service, and science. In 2025, the program expanded to share the spotlight with today’s trailblazers, contemporary New Mexico Women History Makers who are making a difference in their communities today. (www.nmhistoricwomen.org/todays-trailblazers)

Through History Makers, we are excited to invite communities throughout New Mexico to celebrate women of all ages who are making history in our midst – aspiring young leaders, well-established changemakers, living legends, and women quietly making positive change in their communities every day. This is your opportunity to share the story of a woman you know is making a unique and significant positive difference in your community, across the state, or beyond our borders.

To nominate someone, please be prepared to provide as much information as possible about the nominee, including:

  • Specific actions she has taken to address unmet needs or contribute to the greater good (for example, community building, helping lives of younger or older people or lives of the underserved, bringing new ideas to community challenges, redefining artforms or cultural norms).
  • Specific ways she has stepped up - above and beyond expectations for her role or work
  • Specific ways she has impacted her community or others

By nominating someone who has inspired you, you can help us recognize and honor women’s contributions to our state and help ensure their legacies inspire future generations. The eight women chosen will be featured in New Mexico Magazine's March 2027 issue, showcasing their stories and the profound impact they have had on our state. We hope you will join us as we celebrate extraordinary women statewide – past, present, and future.
