Background to the PATHFINDER AWARD for INNOVATION IN CONSERVATION

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are excited to invite nominations/applications for the 2nd PATHFINDER AWARD for INNOVATION IN CONSERVATION.  The Award is supported by the contributions of several partners and funders through projects that are helping to identify and communicate solutions.
An initiative under PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet

The 2nd iteration of the Pathfinder Award will highlight sites that demonstrate the successful and innovative generation of conservation and sustainable development co-benefits as it relates to health, climate and land management. As the gatherings of the three Rio Conventions (CBD COP 15, UNFCCC COP 26 and UNCCD COP 15) are set to take place within 2021 and 2022, winners will be selected in three categories and presented during each of the conferences.

Eligible sites for the Pathfinder Award include formal protected areas as well as areas often referred to as “Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECM)1”. Such sites include:
Territories and areas managed by Indigenous Peoples and/or local communities to maintain natural or near-natural ecosystems
Privately conserved areas, which are managed with a specific conservation objective, but which are not recognised as protected areas under national legislation
Military lands and waters, or portions of military lands and waters that are primarily managed for the purpose of defence, but with specific secondary objectives focused on the conservation of biodiversity.

A winning initiative will be selected for each of the following award categories as it relates to:

1. CBD COP 15
  •  (A) Biodiversity conservation: Innovative protected and conserved area solutions that enhance people’s health and well-being, and could inspire ways to ‘build back better’ following the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • (B) Technology category: Protected and conserved area solutions for innovative and outstanding use of technology for successful nature conservation.
2. UNFCCC COP 26  - (C) Climate change: Innovative Nature-based
Solutions (NbS) for adaptation
