The High School Leadership Institute (HSLI) is a dynamic, hands-on, learning experience. The institute includes training in team-building skills and leadership development. The week is highlighted by a service trip to Chicago.

HSLI allows high school students in their junior year to apply for the opportunity to participate in a summer institute where they study and practice leadership skills and service as a form of community and civic engagement. Students work under the direction of faculty, staff, and college students affiliated with the Wartburg Institute for Leadership Education.

HSLI participants will:
• Participate in team-building activities and hands-on service projects designed to expand and challenge leadership and service skills.
• Travel to Chicago to work with Holy Family Lutheran School and/or church to work with their summer youth program.
• Develop a community service project to be implemented in their home communities during their senior year of high school.
• Work with a trained college student mentor.
• Create a portfolio and submit it for review to the Institute for Leadership Education.

Successful projects and portfolios result in:
• 3.5 semester hours (or one Wartburg credit) of transferable college credit for “LS115: Elements of Leadership"
• A $1,000 renewable scholarship to Wartburg College ($4,000 value)

The cost of the summer institute and the year-long program is $650.00 (a $150.00 deposit will be required upon acceptance into the program). The cost for each participant includes:
• tuition payment for 3.5 hours of college credit (an $900 value)
• leadership resources and materials (over $175 value)
• full room and board on campus for the summer institute (over $250 value)
• travel to and accommodations while in Chicago (over $200 value).

Additionally, participants who attend Wartburg are eligible for a scholarship worth $1,000.00 per year for up to four years.
