The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is seeking volunteer external reviewers to participate in the external technical review committee for the 2022 California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program! If you are interested in farm to school and gaining grant application evaluation experience, this is a great opportunity to review exciting farm to school project proposals from across California and provide invaluable support to the California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program.

Who can be an external reviewer?
Anyone who is interested in and knowledgeable about farm to school and/or farm to early care and education (ECE). Reviewers from California and outside of California are welcome.

Please note: Applicants to the 2022 California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program may not participate in the external technical review process (this includes supporting project partners that are part of Track 2 applications).

What will external reviewers do?
The external review process will take place remotely and not in person.
  • Conflict of Interest Form and Confidentiality Statement: Sign a Conflict of Interest form and Confidentiality Statement. Reviewers may not review any applications from applicants with which/whom they may have a conflict of interest.
  • External Reviewer Training: We held a training session via Zoom on July 21, 2022. We recorded this session for any reviewers who were unable to attend. The 45-minute recording consists of an overview of the grant program and review process, as well as a walk-through of how to score applications and submit scores to the CDFA.
  • Review Process: Review and score applications via an online portal based on the review criteria in the grant program’s Request for Applications. External reviewers may review applications from one or more of the grant program’s four funding tracks (described in further detail in the interest form on the next page).
  • CDFA Support: CDFA staff will provide guidance to external reviewers and answer questions throughout the review process.

What is the timeline and time commitment?
  • Start Date: The external review process has begun. CDFA will select additional reviewers on a rolling basis, through mid-September.
  • Training: We held a training session via Zoom on July 21, 2022. We recorded this session for any reviewers who were unable to attend. The recording is approximately 45 minutes.
  • Review Period: 2-week period to review and score applications
  • Applications to Review: The CDFA will assign each external reviewer approximately 8 to 10 applications. This will depend on the volume of applications the program receives and the number of external reviewers on the external technical review committee. Each application typically takes roughly 40 to 60 minutes to review.

This is a volunteer opportunity:
Please note that the CDFA will not pay external reviewers; this is a volunteer opportunity. We greatly appreciate your time and assistance!
