Study Background
S Holgate St is a busy street in the heart of the Duwamish Manufacturing/Industrial Center, the largest freight hub in the Northwest. About half of all freight rail traffic in Washington passes through this area, along with commuter trains and Amtrak services. With so much activity, S Holgate St and nearby crossings are some of the riskiest rail crossings in the state.
We’re leading a study to explore ways to make this area safer for everyone. This study brings together multiple agencies and focuses on improving safety for all types of travelers.
Our goal is to support Vision Zero, a program to end traffic deaths and serious injuries. We’re looking at how changes to S Holgate St could make it safer, especially for people who are most at risk—those walking, rolling (using a wheelchair or mobility device), biking, scooting, or riding a motorcycle.
