Volunteer EOI for New Year's Eve on Fort Denison |
Thank you Volunteers! NYE on Fort Denison
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NPWS, we are giving 50 of our volunteers a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience - the best seat in the house on New Year’s Eve for you and a guest.
Details and Eligibility: The Volunteer must be in good-standing for at least 12 months, with signed volunteer forms and up-to-date contact details. Each volunteer will be able to bring one guest. Fort Denison will be exclusively for our volunteers; in addition, there will be NPWS staff, security and first aid.
Amenities: Fort Denison is a small heritage fort east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The island has drinking water and toilets, but no food or beverage sales. There are no chairs or tables. Guests are invited to bring their own gourmet picnic and drinks. It is presumed that guests will sit on the eastern grass lawn to watch the fireworks.
Space on the water taxis is very limited, so each guest is only allowed one small chair and blanket and one esky between them. No full-size chairs or beanbags are allowed. Guests should be prepared for all weather; there is limited shelter. We suggest bringing sunscreen, a raincoat, clothes for all weather conditions, and sturdy shoes. You might also want to bring a torch and a radio, so you can settle in and listen to the NYE broadcast.
Transport: Chartered water taxis will leave from Barangaroo Wharf at approx. 6:15pm. At the night's end, a chartered water taxi will return you to Barangaroo Wharf from approx. 1:15-2am. Sydney Harbour is extremely busy on New Year’s Eve, so NPWS cannot guarantee any exact transport times.
Travel: Travel and accommodation is not provided. You and your guest will need to make your way to the Barangaroo Wharf precinct (near King Street Wharf, Darling Harbour) and then return to your home or accommodation. We will provide you with travel information and tips when it becomes available.
Accessibility: Fort Denison is NOT wheelchair accessible. Its disability access level is rated as hard. Guests will need to be able to step in and out of the water taxi, and the site has rough ground and uneven stone steps.
How to Apply: Applications close by midnight on Sunday, 5 November, and we will notify the successful applicants by 11 November. For any questions, please email: NPWS.Volunteering@environment.nsw.gov.au
