Thank you very much for your valuable time in responding to this survey. Your responses will help us greatly in understanding and developing appropriate solutions for businesses to address new and emergent risks.

It takes about 20-25 min to complete this survey.

Purpose of the survey: Please refer to this one-page concept note for extended discussion on this topic. This survey is to understand the mechanism through which local risks may become global risks especially through investments made by various entities (could be private sector entities or public sector entities) in international ventures, and their implications for management of risks especially under the circumstances of changing the climate.

Who can participate in this survey? This survey can be participated by all those entities (including government-related, please see the definition for ‘entity’ below) that are engaged in some kind of operations in a foreign country or have operations with foreign entities within their own country.

Please feel free to contact survey_ad@iges.or.jp if you have any questions regarding this survey.

Definition of terms used in this survey:

Entity: In this survey, entity refers to a company/firm/business either a government body or a non-governmental body that is engaged in domestic and or international operations for producing certain goods and or services with or without a profit motive.

Home country: In this survey, home country refers to the country from where the entity originates and operates.

Local risks: Are risks originating from the place where investments are made and or operations are being carried from. If the entity has international operations, local risks are risks originating at the place of those international operations in a foreign country. If the entity has only domestic operations in collaboration with a foreign entity, local risks are risks originating from the home country.

Globalization of local risks: Refers to spilling of risks beyond the country boundaries where the risk have originated. Risks can spread through various channels that connect across geographical and political boundaries of countries and regions.

Compounding of risks: Compounding of risks refers to interaction between different risks in such a way creating a higher magnitude of overall outcome risk (i.e. for e.g. 1+2=4) that may not have been accounted for in the risk management strategies or could be beyond the capacity of a firm or an institution or a government or a society to manage. Part of this incapacitation could be due to the limited understanding of risks and how they interact with each other.

Operations: In this survey, operations refers to all the business activities performed by an entity including investments, collaborations, manufacturing, providing services etc. with an objective of producing certain goods and or services with or without a profit motive.
