About

The Mumber Award for Excellence in Cancer Patient Navigation and its associated grant of $2,000 is presented annually by the Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia (CPNG) to a Georgia cancer navigator that has demonstrated an appreciation of the essential role of patient navigators, Community Health Workers and/or promotoras in providing a patient-centered approach to supporting cancer survivors. The award, previously named the Matt Mumber, MD Visionary Award, began in February 2013 with a goal to emulate Dr. Mumber’s passion for patient-centered care. Past recipients have shown leadership in advancing navigation to improve patient outcomes.
Criteria for submission:

The Navigation Excellence Award recognizes that navigator who shares the Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia vision to make access to patient navigation available to all Georgians with the goal of improving the quality of care and quality of life for all patients and their families throughout the entire continuum of cancer care.

In honor of Matt Mumber’s vision, the award is presented to the navigator who embraces the CPNG values and guiding principles of inclusiveness, collaboration, compassion, and a holistic approach to achieving optimal patient outcomes.

Priority will be given to nominees who have created unique or innovative collaborations within the cancer care community to connect, educate and share best practices among patient navigators in Georgia so that together we can successfully reduce barriers and increase access to services specifically related to cancer. Or, to those navigators who have shown courage and innovation in advancing the workforce of patient navigators/CHWs.

In addition to the qualities described above, the winner of this award will be a person or program that:
  • Has not won the award in the last two years;
  • Emulates Dr. Mumber's passion for patient-oriented care; and
  • Demonstrates exceptionalism and leadership in patient navigation.
The honoree will be highlighted at the "For the Benefit of All - Investigator's Seminar" on Feb 21-22, 2024 in Atlanta, GA.

Applications are due Friday, December 8, 2023.
