Wrong sided regional anaesthetic procedures are rare and preventable. It is suspected that wrong sided blocks are under-reported. A review of the literature suggests an incidence of 1 in 10,000 regional procedures and there are limited case reports published, however surveys in the United Kingdom have demonstrated them to be more common than this.
This survey aims to sample Gold Coast Anaesthetists on their frequency of performing regional anaesthesia and their exposure directly or indirectly to wrong-sided blocks. It also aims to guage attitude towards a new safety checklist prior to unilateral blocks. This checklist has been endorsed and implemented by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the United Kingdom and is to be brought into the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service. This checklist is titled "Stop Before You Block".
