About the Project

As part of the Needs Assessment process, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility is seeking community input on the preferred alternative for the future of 1st Avenue.

The 1st Avenue improvement project was originally conceived of as a 6-lane widening in the 2006 RTA plan. However, in the 15-years since adoption of that plan, the transportation context and needs within Tucson have changed. Notably, all projects are now being designed in the framework of the City of Tucson's 2019 Complete Streets policy.

The Needs Assessment is providing the opportunity to revisit the project scope for 1st Avenue and align investments with current community priorities.

Please review the information and take a short survey to tell us which Corridor Alternative you prefer. Your input will inform the option that is moved forward for more detailed project planning and design.
Cross Sections

The conceptual cross sections below illustrate the differences between the 4 and 6-lane alternatives. Note that both alternatives will include medians or pedestrian islands, continuous and accessible sidewalks, enhanced bike lanes, and improved landscaping. Both alternatives will include a new bridge over the Rillito River. The primary difference between the two would be an additional travel lane requiring 20 more feet of right-of-way in the 6-lane alternative.
