Town Greening Pilot Program 2024

Expressions of interest are now open for the 2024 Town Greening Program.

This is a pilot program to support residents’ efforts in greening their streets and will supply native trees for verges within the York residential township.

The tree species for this program are native to the wheatbelt and have been selected in collaboration with the York Wildflower Society and River Conservation Society.

Expressions of interest close when trees are fully allocated. To check your eligibility to participate in the pilot program, view the information available in the Program Guidelines.

The tree collection date will be between July - August. At pick-up tree recipients will be provided with one tree to take home and plant on their verge.

Please note there are limited places available in the 2024 pilot program. Expressions of interest will be considered on a first received basis.

Tree Collection: Collecting the tree from a pick-up point in York.

Contact 'Dial Before You Dig': Before any digging begins, it's crucial to contact 'Dial Before You Dig' to ensure that the planned planting area is clear of underground services, preventing potential damage and ensuring safety.

Avoid Planting Near Low Power Lines or Western Power Supply Poles: To prevent future conflicts with power lines and to ensure safety, trees should not be planted near low-hanging power lines or close to poles supporting the Western Power supply.

Tree Placement Guidelines: The tree should be planted 1.5 metres away from the road, 3 metres from a street corner, and positioned so it does not obstruct traffic visibility, ensuring safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

Preparing the Hole and Planting the Tree: Preparation of the planting hole and planting the tree.

Maintain and Water Tree Until Established: Watering and maintaining the tree for the first 12 months until the tree is established and can sustain itself, ensuring its growth and survival.

Verge trees are the responsibility of the Council to manage in partnership with the community. Council may be required to address safety issues or maintenance activities on the tree and this may occur without notice.
