Grant Application Form - American Nuclear Society: Asset-Based Collaboration on Interim Storage Siting of Used Fuel |
Recipient of an award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the American Nuclear Society Nuclear Siting Consortium's "Asset-Based Collaboration for Effective Engagement in Interim Storage Siting" project is a two-year program to develop a replicable, scalable nationwide community engagement model for the collaborative-based siting of consolidated interim storage facilities for used nuclear fuel.
In partnership with the City College of New York, Northern Arizona University, South Carolina State University, and University of New Mexico, the DOE-funded project seeks to co-create sustainable dialogue with community-based organizations across America.
Apply below for community grants to co-create events and activities for fund creative events and programs centered around nuclear energy and the transportation and storage of spent nuclear fuel.
Community grants aim to:
- Prepare communities with the technical assistance and capacity to apply for the DOE's forthcoming Expression of Interest, slated in Autumn 2025, to express interest in potentially hosting an interim storage facility. Ensure community ideas become part of a collaborative-based siting process.
- Co-create events focused on nuclear waste issues, such collaborative siting and consolidated interim storage.
- Facilitate dialogue among communities, the DOE, and scientific nuclear experts.
Some suggested event ideas:
- Host a "town hall" or panel discussion featuring local organizations, community leaders, DOE representatives, and nuclear scientific experts.
- Hold public discussions on nuclear energy and nuclear waste storage.
- Tour a nuclear facility, such as a nuclear power plant or research reactor.
- Screen an educational documentary—e.g. "Nuclear Now" and "Juice: How Electricity Explains the World"— followed by a Q&A "ask the experts" discussion.
