Will you be one of the lucky authors selected to brave GenreCon’s fan-favourite Shreader event in 2026?

Held as part of Sunday lunch, a small group of authors will have their opening pages publicly, professionally – and anonymously – read to a panel of GenreCon authors and speakers. They’ll decide how far to read on – will they like it enough to offer their critique, or will it get sent to the shredder?

Keep in mind that even anonymously, having your work publicly read, critiqued – and potentially shredded – in front of an audience can be harrowing. By making your application, you agree to be part of this experience if your work is selected. Try not to squirm or give yourself away! It’s a fun event and a fantastic opportunity to receive realtime feedback on your work from professionals – and a crowd.

* 3. Upload a writing sample – please upload the first five pages from your manuscript (or approx. 1,500 words), formatted to standard specifications:
  • 12 point, Times New Roman font
  • Double line spacing
  • 1" or 3cm margins on an A4 page
  • Page numbered
  • Project title bolded and centred at the top of the first page

Ensure your name or identifying information does not appear anywhere in your submission.

PDF and Microsoft Word .doc & .docx files are accepted.

  • Entries are open exclusively to GenreCon ticketholders—from beginners through to professional writers.
  • The work must not be published, contracted for publication or otherwise embargoed.
  • All rights remain with the author.
  • Multiple submissions permitted.
  • Electronic submissions through this form only; no correspondence or feedback will be given, and only selected writers will be notified.
  • Up to 6 pieces will be selected in a blind read by a panel from the GenreCon team.
