1. Introduction

Welcome to the New York State Arts Standards Public Review of drafts of the Pre K-High School standards. The New York State Department of Education convened teams of Arts Standards writers in Albany during the summer of 2016. Experts in the field of Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual and Media Arts developed updated P-12 Learning Standards for the Arts for New York students. This public review of the draft standards will be accomplished using unique surveys for each arts discipline. Although you need only complete the portion of the survey pertaining to the discipline and level with which you are most familiar and comfortable, you are highly encouraged to review additional portions of the draft as time may permit. If you would like to review more than one discipline, please go to http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/arts/ to access links to other discipline standards documents and surveys, as well as Resources that may be helpful.

Before beginning this survey, you should familiarize yourself with  National Core Arts Standards: A Conceptual Framework for Arts Learning, which outlines the organizational structure of the standards (Framework Matrix) and provides some background information, thereby providing a context for the review. While not a part of this review, please be aware that The National Core Arts Standards Inclusions Strategies pertain to NYS standards as well.

Navigating
The review is set up in these five sections:
  • Section I: Demographics Questions
  • Section II: Overarching Review Questions
  • Section III: Specific Section Review Questions
  • Section IV: Implementation Guide Questions
  • Section V: Final Suggestions

At the bottom of each section you will find “BACK” and “NEXT” buttons to navigate through the survey. Clicking "NEXT" advances you to the next page and saves any information or responses you have typed into the survey.

You may pause and save your work at anytime by clicking "NEXT" and then bookmarking the page. If you choose to save your work and return later, you will need to have cookies enabled. You will also need to return to the same computer and use the same browser to access your saved survey.

The time allotment needed to complete this survey depends on how much time you spend with the draft standards. Please try to budget your time so the end sections receive as much attention as those near the beginning. Section 1 is very brief. Section II may require up to 15 minutes. To complete Section III, you may need to allow up to 15 minutes for each row of standards in the At-a-Glance chart, plus an additional 15 minutes each for overarching and final questions, depending on how many suggestions you make and your familiarity with the standards draft before you begin. You may work in more than one session as noted in the instructions above.

Once you have completed the survey, click “DONE” to submit your responses.
