Migrant and Diaspora Population: The United Nations estimates that there are 90,000 Gambian migrants. In his latest estimate (September 2017), the Gambian statistician C.O. Kebbeh puts the population of Gambians living abroad at 140,000, being about 7% of the population. Based on this estimate, the top 7 countries of residence are: Italy, United States, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden and Senegal.

Profile of the Diaspora: According to the OECD, in 2011, out of 144 countries assessed, proportionately, The Gambia had the 15th highest rate of emigration of highly-educated individuals. On the other hand, in 2016, proportionately, The Gambia has the highest rate of irregular (back-way) migrants using the perilous Saharan-Mediterranean route to Europe – mainly Italy and Spain, and onward to Germany.

Amount of Remittances: According to the World Bank, in 2016, the total of formal diaspora remittances to The Gambia was $200m, being about 22% of GDP. It is estimated that if remittances sent though informal means were included in the annual sum, it would represent over one-third of GDP. In 2014, as a percentage to GDP, The Gambia was the 10th remittance receiving country in the world, and the 3rd in Africa.

Gambian Diaspora Survey: This survey will directly inform the formulation of a Gambian Diaspora Strategy, to be adopted and implemented by the Government of The Gambia (GOTG) from 2018 on wards. The theme of the strategy is ‘Enhancing the role of the diaspora in Gambian development’. The survey is undertaken under the Migration and Sustainable Development in The Gambia (MSDG) Project. The MSDG project is led by Professor Gibril Faal; designed and implemented by GK Partners in partnership with GOTG; financed by the Swiss Government.

On behalf of the MSDG project, we thank you for your kind assistance and cooperation
