1. Introduction/Consent

Thank you for your interest in our study, “Adaptation and Resiliency in Families of Children with Down Syndrome." The purpose of the study is to learn more about factors that influence how families respond following the birth of a child with Down syndrome.

Participation in the study includes completing a series of questionnaires. Also, for those of you who are willing to be interviewed, the interview will be a telephone interview conducted at a date/time that is convenient for you.

We are interested in hearing from both mothers and fathers, so if you have a spouse or partner, please ask them to consider participating too (if they are interested in completing the online version - we will send them a second link because parents from the same family can not use the same link).

The first questionnaire is a Family Information questionnaire in which you are asked background questions about your child with Down syndrome, you, and your family. The next questionnaire is a questionnaire about how your family manages caring for a child with a chronic condition, such as Down syndrome. The final questionnaires are questionnaires about you, your family and factors (such as family stressors and strains, family resources, family support, and family problem-solving coming) that may influence how your families responds and adapts to the ongoing challenges associated with raising a child with Down syndrome.

The questionnaires should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Please answer all the questions based on what you think, not on how you think others might respond. If you agree to be interviewed, the interview will take 60-90 minutes.

The project has been approved by the institutional review board for human subjects research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All the information you give will be kept confidential. No one except our research team will have access to your information.

If you have questions or concerns please either email me at vanriper@email.unc.edu or telephone me at 919-966-4284.

Thank you very much for participating in this study. Your answers are very important to my research team and I.

Sincerely,

Marcia
