The City of Ouray is seeking community input regarding the State of Colorado’s Wildfire Resiliency Code and its potential application within our community. Your feedback is important in helping City leadership understand local perspectives as we evaluate policies that may impact property owners, development standards, and long-term community safety.
About the Wildfire Resiliency CodeThe State of Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code establishes minimum standards for construction, landscaping, and defensible space in areas at risk of wildfire.
The City is required to adopt provisions that meet or exceed the regulations set forth in the Wildfire Resiliency Code. Please note that this is an unfunded mandate per CRS Sec 29-1-304.5. The intent of the code is to reduce the risk of structure ignition during wildfires, enhance public safety, and improve community resilience. Requirements may include the use of fire-resistant building materials, vegetation management practices, and site design considerations in wildfire-prone areas.
The Code applies to new construction and certain remodel work. It is not retroactive. While these measures are designed to mitigate wildfire risk, they may also affect development costs, property maintenance, and design flexibility. Community input is essential to ensure that any adopted approach reflects the values, priorities, and unique character of Ouray, while recognizing and meeting the legal mandate from the State.
