Every year, NAMI North Carolina recognizes individuals or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary work and advocacy on behalf of all those affected by mental illness. There are several award categories that are considered. Please review the eligible award categories listed below and complete the requested information for the individual or organization you'd like to nominate. Nominations will be reviewed and awards selected by an awards committee. 
Award Nominations must be received no later than September 18, 2017.  

AWARD CATEGORIES

The Lifetime Achievement Award: Given to a NAMI North Carolina member who has had a profound statewide impact on the lives of people living with mental illness and their families. The individual should have been involved in NAMI North Carolina activities for a minimum of five years.

The Mike Mayer Advocate of the Year: Given, when awarded, to an individual who has had a significant impact on the lives of people living with mental illness and their families in a local community. (Please note that the Advocate of the Year is an award for local service and the Lifetime Achievement Award is for statewide service.)

The Steve Jordan Award: This award is named after Steve Jordan, a former Division of Mental Health Director, and long-time advocate who tragically died in 2012. Given to an individual(s) within the mental health community who has been a particularly effective innovator and/or advocate for the development of services or supports for people living with mental illness and their families.

The Media Award: Presented to a media representative(s) who, during the course of the year, has actively supported NAMI North Carolina’s mission to support, educate, and advocate on behalf of people living with mental illness and their families.

The John Baggett Award: This award is named after John Baggett, a former NAMI Executive Director and mental health division director and long-time mental health advocate. Created to recognize the local community efforts of a non-member on behalf of people living with mental illness and their families.

The Military/Veteran Award: Awarded to honor exceptional work to improve the quality of life of those in the military services or veterans regarding their behavioral health needs. May also include services to the families of those in the military who are affected by behavioral health issues.

The President’s Award: Given, when awarded, to recognize an individual(s) who has persevered in his/her battle against mental illness and made a positive difference in the lives of others. This award can only be given by the current President of the NAMI NC Board of Directors.

Youth Empowerment Award: Given to recognize a youth (25 years or younger) with a connection to mental illness who has had a significant impact in the community through activities such as bringing youth into NAMI, involvement in campus clubs, raising awareness and engagement in NAMI programs.

Elaine and David Purpel Family Respite Award: Set up in loving memory of one of NAMI North Carolina’s founders, Elaine Purpel, this special award is given to a family needing rest and reflection. The award includes a five day, four night stay at the Well of Mercy along with two services of the recipients’ choice. The Well of Mercy is a ministry of hospitality and healing and is located in Hamptonville, NC.
