Hybrid Vehicle (HEV) – A vehicle powered by a traditional gasoline engine with an electric motor(s) to provide improved fuel economy and performance. The engine charges the battery, so the vehicle never has to be plugged in.

Electric Vehicle (EV) – Has an electric motor that uses electricity stored in a battery, which is recharged by plugging it in. It does not use any gasoline.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – Similar to a Hybrid vehicle, a plug-in hybrid is powered by a traditional gasoline engine with an electric motor, but has a larger battery that can be charged by either the engine or by plugging it in, and it allows the vehicle to be driven on battery power only, for a short trip.
