Application Process

The North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) will be holding its Young Adult Leadership and Advocacy Training on April 25-27th, 2019 in Bloomington, MN. The training is designed for young adults (ages 18 to 25) who have experienced foster care, adoption, or kinship care—and their staff supporters—and who are committed to creating or enhancing youth support networks or advocacy teams in their community.

Selected participants will have training fees, lodging, and airfare covered by NACAC, with funding from Jockey Being Family®. NACAC will be selecting 5-6 teams throughout the US and Canada to attend the training.

We are currently seeking applications from teams of 3 to 5 who want to attend the training. Each team should consist of 2 or 3 young adult leaders and by 1 or 2 staff supporters. Applicants must identify all potential participants before submitting your application. If your team has previously attended this NACAC training, you must engage new young adult leaders to attend. Applications are due by March 12, 2019.

The 2019 Youth Leadership and Advocacy Training is a three-day training to provide young adult leaders knowledge and skills to start or enhance their youth support or advocacy networks, cultivate their unique leadership skills, increase their understanding of child welfare legislation, and influence child welfare policy. The training will also include sessions aimed at equipping young leaders with wellness tools and action planning strategies for personal and team efforts.

At this event, young adults and staff will learn about creating supports and services that directly benefit other youth and are led by those who have experienced foster care, adoption, or kinship care. They will also be able to identify advocacy issues for their communities and strategies to use their experiences to help promote child welfare system changes. The expectation is for each selected team to be committed to creating new or enhancing current youth support networks or advocacy teams within their community.

NACAC will provide attendees:

· A free three-day training on youth support and advocacy
· Advocacy action planning
· Airfare to and from Minnesota, arranged by NACAC
· Three nights of lodging — Rooms will be shared unless a participant requests an individual room; in this event NACAC will cover half of the individual room cost and the attendee will pay the other half.
· Breakfast, lunch, and snacks during the training — Dinner will be attendees’ responsibility.
· Support following the training to assist teams in achieving the team’s goals
