Being a Local Guide can be a great choice for people who are passionate about travel, enjoy meeting new people, and want to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for their region.
We are looking for people who would like to register an expression of interest to work, on a casual basis, as a Local Guide to escort cruise ship passengers arriving at Newcastle on shore excursion tours within Newcastle and the Greater Hunter region including the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast and Maitland/Morpeth. The peak cruise season for Newcastle is September-March.
These are paid roles and Local Guides are remunerated based on hours worked. Whilst experience in tour guiding is preferred, if you have excellent communication skills, knowledge of the region and passion for sharing stories this could be a role for you.
It is the primary responsibility of the Local Guide to make sure the passenger’s trip is enjoyable and runs as smoothly as possible. A great Local Guide has:
- Excellent conversational skills with a knack for storytelling
- A cheerful and positive nature - a Local Guide needs to be enjoyable to be around
- To be organised and punctual to maintain the tour schedule
- A good memory - the ability to memorise facts and stories to share information
- Knowledge of the experiences on the tours and the ability to research
- Reliability - must be reliable and turn up on time for tour departures.
