Region 5: Geographic Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) Career Development Workshop 2023
Thank you for your interest in the Region 5 GMaP Workshop, happening July 11-12, 2023.
The Career Development Workshop is an annual two-day workshop that brings together trainees, early-career investigators, and senior investigators from institutions throughout the region. The purpose of the workshop is to provide small group instruction and one-on-one mentoring to individuals who intend to apply for grant funding in the coming year.
Who should apply: Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or junior faculty/equivalent.
A portion of the application will ask you about topics of interest in the realm of career development, as well as what are the most relevant scientific discipline categories of interest to you at this time. Previous workshops have covered topics such as: how to write specific aims, how to choose a funding mechanism, engaging diverse communities in research, qualitative research, and professional/personal life balance. Typically, the second day focuses on developing innovative research ideas, writing/fine tuning a biosketch, followed by one-on-one mentoring with seasoned investigators and one-on-one conversations with senior investigators on one’s own specific aims. There is also an opportunity for roundtable mentoring and networking with your peers.
Workshop Logistics: This two-day training will take place on the Fred Hutch campus in Seattle, WA* and will be available to up to 20 participants. Trainees from backgrounds underrepresented in science based on the NIH definition** are particularly encouraged to apply, and/or those who are interested in cancer heath disparities work. Region 5 (includes AK, WA, OR, CA, HI, American Samoa and Guam) applicants will be given priority however trainees from other U.S. states or territories and/or trainees who have previously attended are also welcome to apply.
*We are holding hybrid workshop format. Selected applicants will be invited to travel to Seattle (unless your preference is to attend virtually). The GMaP program will cover travel costs for those invited to attend the in-person component: airfare, one-night hotel stay (two if you are asked to participate in the symposium or are traveling from HI, Guam or American Samoa), and lunch during the meeting. All additional expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant.
Optional: As an applicant, you may opt in to participate in a mini-symposia pre-workshop (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty/early-career investigators). You are given the opportunity to submit an abstract below. Highly rated abstracts will be considered to present in the morning GMaP symposia.
