1. What is Fix the Patent Laws all about?

Often people don’t have access to the medicines they need in South Africa because lifesaving drugs are priced out of reach. This affects all types of drugs: treatments for drug-resistant tuberculosis, cancer, hepatitis, newer antiretroviral medications for HIV, contraceptives, mental health, and more.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the Treatment Action Campaign, and Section27 incorporating the AIDS Law Project, are together advocating for the South African government to adopt laws which promote affordable medicine through the Fix the Patent Laws campaign. With this survey, the campaign hopes to expand its knowledge of medicine price and access issues, make contacts with clinicians interested in IP reform, and find patient stories.

If you have information about a drug that is unaffordable or inaccessible, or about a patient who has been impacted by this, please fill out the below survey and/or contact Mara Kardas-Nelson of MSF at marajenn@gmail.com or 078 845 7364. Please note that all stories will be kept 100% anonymous and confidential if required. Patients’ needs will be put first.

Please note: If you think that a medicine(s) is not available because it's out of stock, please report suspected stock outs to Stop the Stock Outs campaign. All information can be reported to Stop the Stock Outs anonymously. To report, please contact 084 855 7867 (Missed call, SMS, Please Call Me, Phone, WhatsApp), or email admin@stockouts.org
